Jack Slaughter

VP of Sales, Gartner

What prompted you to reach out?

"I was consistently performing below my best self, personally and professionally, and recognised I had moved fully into a state of perseverance which started to weigh heavy."

Was there anything that made you hesitate?

"Yes, I was fearful that I wasn't really in the frame of mind to commit to a process with clarity of thought to get benefit, due to an overloaded work schedule."

What surprised you most about the process?

"I was surprised that there was an initial impact on my mental state, a feeling that a weight was lifted, just by working through the dialogue. It makes you work hard to find your own answers. I learned that the more thoughtful I was in my responses, the more value I got."

What's changed for you?

"Practically I am applying a more solutions focused, pragmatic mindset to daily challenges, with better clarity of thought. Tasks I once found daunting or resentful I now view in a different way and get a different experience out of them."

You also brought this to your team. What was the context?

"My leaders and their teams were feeling what I was feeling, arguably even more overwhelmed. I wanted to invest in them and show them how their behaviours and actions can impact those around them."

What did you notice in the room?

"People felt energised and uplifted and really started to reconnect with their association to the company and their role within it."

What was the lasting impact?

"I still hear them play back certain questions from the exercise, it helps them make better decisions on a daily basis."

Would you bring this to a team again?

"Yes. The next most impactful use case would be at the start of the next fiscal year, when there's an opportunity to embed new values, beliefs and behaviours into the region."

What would you say to someone considering this work?

"Don't look for a perfect state or moment to engage. Things don't need to be bad in order to progress. If you want to improve your overall effectiveness and presence of mind, it's worthwhile."
